Whirlpool Corporation is the most common brand family we service in Lubbock. Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, and Amana are all made by the same parent company, which means they share platforms, parts, and failure patterns. If you own any appliance from this family, chances are we have worked on your exact model before.
We are not Whirlpool authorized -- our manufacturer authorization is through Electrolux/Frigidaire via ServicePower. But Whirlpool-family appliances are the backbone of our daily repair work. We carry the most common Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, and Amana parts on the van and can typically diagnose and repair in a single visit.
Common Whirlpool / Maytag Failures
Washer F-codes and lid lock failures. Whirlpool and Maytag top-load washers are known for lid lock problems. The lid lock motor or switch fails, throwing F5 E1 or F5 E2 error codes. The washer will not start or gets stuck mid-cycle. We also see F7 E1 (motor not reaching target RPM), F0 E2 (excessive load), and the F3 E1 pressure sensor issue that affects certain VMW-model top-loaders. Whirlpool released Technical Service Pointer W11766193 for the pressure transducer problem -- we follow the updated repair procedure.
Dryer heating element and thermal fuse. Whirlpool and Maytag dryers are generally reliable, but the heating element and thermal fuse are the most common failure points. A clogged dryer vent is usually the root cause -- the restricted airflow causes the dryer to overheat, which blows the thermal fuse and can damage the heating element over time. We always check the vent when diagnosing a dryer that is not heating.
Refrigerator defrost system and ice maker. Whirlpool side-by-side and French-door refrigerators can develop defrost system failures. The defrost heater, defrost thermostat (bimetal), or adaptive defrost control board fails, causing ice buildup on the evaporator coils. Result: the freezer gets too warm, the fridge compartment warms up, and you get frost visible through the back panel of the freezer. The ice maker is the other common issue -- fill tube freezes, mold cracks, or the optics board fails.
Dishwasher control board and circulation pump. Whirlpool and Maytag dishwashers (especially models with W10711303 and related boards) can experience control board failures. The dishwasher may not start, get stuck on a cycle, or have a dead control panel. Water leaks from the pump seal area are also common on older units.
Dishwasher circulation pump screen (newer models). Newer Whirlpool, Maytag, and KitchenAid dishwashers have a fine mesh screen inside the circulation pump assembly. If this screen gets damaged or clogged, the circulation pump stops running. The tricky part: the control board uses amp draw from the circulation pump to measure water level, so a failed pump can throw an inlet valve error code instead of a pump code. The whole pump assembly can be replaced, but in many cases we can fix it by simply removing the damaged screen -- the dishwasher runs fine without it.
Range igniter failure. Gas ranges from Whirlpool, Maytag, and KitchenAid use a hot surface igniter (HSI) to light the oven burner. These igniters weaken over time and eventually cannot get hot enough to open the gas valve. The oven clicks and glows but does not ignite, or takes 5-10 minutes to light. Igniter replacement is one of the most common oven repairs we do.
Model Notes
VMW top-load washers (F3 E1 pressure sensor). Certain Whirlpool-made top-load washers have a known pressure transducer failure that causes F3 E1 error codes or continuous drain pump operation. We wrote a detailed guide on this problem including the updated repair procedure from Whirlpool's service bulletin. If your VMW-model washer is throwing F3 E1, this is likely the issue.
Maytag commercial-style washers (W11786877B water valve). The Maytag MVWP586GW and related commercial-style top-loaders can develop a specific water inlet valve failure. Whirlpool issued a service advisory (W11786877B) for this. We have a full write-up on this issue including affected model numbers and the repair procedure.
Shared parts across brands. Because Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, and Amana share platforms, a part number that fits one brand often fits the others. This means better parts availability and faster repairs. If we have the Whirlpool version on the van, it typically fits the equivalent Maytag, KitchenAid, or Amana model.
Repair vs. Replace
Whirlpool-family appliances are generally good repair candidates. They use widely available parts, the designs are well-documented, and component costs are reasonable. Most Whirlpool, Maytag, and KitchenAid appliances are worth repairing through 8-12 years of age depending on the specific issue.
Amana is the budget line -- simpler designs, fewer features, lower initial cost. When an Amana unit needs a major repair, the math sometimes favors replacement because the repair cost is a higher percentage of a new unit. We will give you the numbers and let you decide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What brands does Whirlpool make?
Whirlpool Corporation manufactures Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, and Amana -- all under the same roof, sharing the same platforms and the same parts. A Maytag washer and a Whirlpool washer built on the same platform use identical internal components with different external styling. That means one diagnosis covers all four brands, and a part we carry for Whirlpool typically fits the Maytag, KitchenAid, or Amana equivalent.
Why does my Whirlpool washer keep showing error codes?
The most common Whirlpool washer error codes are lid lock errors (F5 E1, F5 E2), motor errors (F7 E1), and pressure sensor errors (F3 E1). Each code points to a specific component. Check our Whirlpool and Maytag F-code guide for a full breakdown of what each code means.
Are Whirlpool and Maytag the same company?
Yes. Whirlpool Corporation owns the Maytag brand. Many Whirlpool and Maytag models are built on the same platform with the same components. The main difference is styling, feature sets, and price positioning -- Maytag is positioned as the more durable commercial-style brand.
Is it worth repairing an old Whirlpool refrigerator?
Most Whirlpool refrigerator repairs are cost-effective through 10-12 years. Common repairs like defrost system components, ice makers, and fans are relatively affordable. Sealed system repairs (compressor, refrigerant leak) on a unit over 10 years old are where we start to recommend considering replacement.
Why does my gas oven take so long to preheat?
A weakening hot surface igniter is the most common cause. The igniter has to reach a specific temperature before the gas valve opens. As it ages, it takes longer to reach that temperature or cannot reach it at all. Igniter replacement is a straightforward repair.
