GE and GE Profile appliances are installed in thousands of homes across Lubbock. The brand has changed ownership over the years (now owned by Haier), but GE appliances remain one of the most common brands we service. We repair GE refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers, ranges, and microwaves. GE parts are widely available and most repairs are straightforward for an experienced technician.
Common GE Failures
Refrigerator motherboard and defrost issues. GE refrigerators, especially the GE Profile and GE Cafe lines, can develop main control board failures. Symptoms include erratic temperatures, the fridge running too cold or too warm, or the display going blank. The defrost system on GE side-by-side and French door models can also fail, leading to frost buildup on the evaporator coil and a fridge that cools poorly. We see failed defrost heaters, defrost thermostats, and defrost timer or control board issues regularly.
Dishwasher not cleaning or draining properly. GE dishwashers, particularly the older Nautilus series and newer GDT/GDP models, can develop wash motor failures, drain pump clogs, and circulation issues. The wash impeller can crack or wear, reducing water pressure. GE dishwashers also have a common issue where the door latch or door switch fails, preventing the machine from starting or completing a cycle.
Washer lid lock and control board problems. GE top-load washers use an electronic lid lock that can fail, giving a lid lock error and preventing the machine from running. The main control board on GE top-loaders can also develop issues, especially on the GTW and GFW series. We see intermittent failures where the washer stops mid-cycle, skips cycles, or throws error codes.
Range igniter failure. GE gas ranges use a flat hot-surface igniter (glow bar) to light the oven burner. These igniters weaken over time. The oven clicks, the igniter glows, but it never gets hot enough to open the gas valve. The oven either does not heat at all or takes 20-30 minutes to reach temperature. This is one of the most common GE range repairs we perform, and the fix is usually quick.
GE Profile over-the-range microwave issues. The magnetron, door switches, and control boards on GE Profile microwaves fail with moderate frequency. Door switch failure is the most common -- the microwave appears dead or runs intermittently because one of the three door interlock switches has failed.
Model Notes
GE Profile and GE Cafe are the premium lines. They have more features and more electronics, which means more potential failure points. Standard GE appliances tend to be simpler and more reliable long-term.
GE refrigerator models starting with GFE, GNE, GSS, and PFE are among the most common we service. The older Hotpoint brand (also made by GE/Haier) uses many of the same parts and has similar failure patterns.
GE Appliances is now owned by Haier, the Chinese appliance manufacturer. Newer GE models may share components with Haier designs. So far, the parts availability and serviceability remain good.
Field Examples
A customer reported their GE Profile French door refrigerator was freezing everything in the fresh food section. The main control board had a failed relay that was keeping the compressor running continuously. We replaced the board and the fridge returned to normal operation. Total repair time was under an hour.
We serviced a GE gas range that would not heat past 250 degrees. The oven igniter was drawing low amperage, just enough to glow but not enough to open the safety valve fully. New igniter installed, oven reached 400 degrees in under 10 minutes. This is a textbook GE range repair that we perform multiple times a month.
Repair vs Replace
GE appliances are generally very repairable. Parts are affordable, widely available, and the designs are service-friendly compared to some European brands. A GE appliance under 10 years old is almost always worth repairing unless it has a catastrophic failure like a sealed system leak or a cracked tub.
The GE Profile and Cafe lines cost more to repair due to premium components (touchscreen displays, advanced electronics), but the base GE line is one of the most cost-effective brands to service. We are straight with you about repair costs relative to the age and value of the unit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is GE the same company it used to be?
GE Appliances is now owned by Haier Group, which purchased the division from General Electric in 2016. Manufacturing is still primarily in the US (Louisville, KY). The product line has actually expanded since the acquisition, and parts availability remains excellent.
Are GE Profile appliances worth the extra cost?
GE Profile appliances offer premium features and finishes, but they also have more complex electronics that can fail. From a repair standpoint, standard GE appliances are simpler and often more reliable. Whether the upgrade is worth it depends on which features matter to you.
Can you repair GE Cafe appliances?
Yes. GE Cafe is the premium line from GE Appliances. We repair all Cafe models including refrigerators, ranges, dishwashers, and microwaves. Parts are available through standard GE parts distributors.
How long should a GE appliance last?
With proper maintenance, most GE appliances last 10-15 years. Refrigerators and ranges tend toward the longer end. Dishwashers and microwaves are typically 8-12 years. These are averages -- individual lifespan depends on usage, water quality, and maintenance.
