Your dryer started making a thumping, squealing, scraping, or grinding noise that was not there before. Dryer noises are almost always mechanical, meaning something is worn, broken, or out of position inside the drum assembly. The good news is that most dryer noise repairs are straightforward once we identify which component has failed.
Common Causes
Worn drum support rollers. Most dryers have two or four small rubber-wheeled rollers that support the drum as it spins. When these rollers wear flat or lose their round shape, the drum wobbles and produces a rhythmic thumping or rumbling sound. This is the single most common cause of dryer noise.
Worn drum glides or slides. The front of the dryer drum rests on plastic or felt glide strips. As these wear down, the metal drum contacts the front panel or bulkhead, causing a scraping or squealing noise. You may also see dark marks on clothes from the metal-on-metal contact.
Broken or stretched drum belt. The drive belt wraps around the drum and connects to the motor. When the belt frays, cracks, or stretches, it can cause a thumping or slapping sound. A broken belt means the drum does not spin at all, but a worn belt can slip and make noise before it breaks completely.
Worn drum bearing. Some dryers (especially Maytag and certain GE models) use a rear drum bearing. When this bearing wears, it produces a grinding or squealing noise that gets louder over time. The bearing supports the back of the drum and is under constant load during operation.
Idler pulley failure. The idler pulley maintains tension on the drum belt. It has a small bearing or bushing that can wear out, producing a high-pitched squealing or squeaking noise. The noise usually gets louder as the dryer heats up because the lubricant in the pulley bearing thins.
Loose or foreign objects. Coins, buttons, screws, and other small items can fall out of pockets and land between the drum and the dryer housing. This creates a metallic rattling or clinking sound that changes with drum speed. Sometimes the item works its way into the blower housing, creating a louder noise.
Blower wheel issue. The blower wheel pushes air through the dryer and out the exhaust vent. If the blower wheel cracks, comes loose on its shaft, or gets clogged with lint, it can produce a rattling, vibrating, or roaring noise.
What You Can Check First
Run the dryer empty. If the noise goes away when the dryer is empty, something in your clothes (a zipper, button, or item in a pocket) may be hitting the drum. Check pockets before loading.
Check for items between the drum and housing. Shine a flashlight around the edges of the drum where it meets the front and rear panels. Look for coins, screws, or fabric stuck in the gap. Sometimes you can fish out small items with needle-nose pliers.
Check the lint trap and exhaust vent. A severely clogged lint trap or exhaust vent can cause the blower to work harder and create unusual noise. Clean the lint trap and check the exterior vent flap to make sure it opens freely when the dryer runs.
Level the dryer. An unlevel dryer can vibrate and create thumping or banging noises, especially during tumble. Check that all four feet are touching the floor and adjust the leveling legs if needed.
When You Need a Technician
Call a technician if the noise is consistent regardless of what is in the dryer, if the noise is getting progressively louder, if you hear grinding or metal-on-metal sounds, or if the drum seems to wobble visibly when you spin it by hand. A worn component that is left unrepaired can damage other parts. For example, worn drum rollers can put extra stress on the belt and motor, turning a simple roller replacement into a more expensive repair.
How We Fix This in Lubbock
When we arrive for a noisy dryer service call, we run the dryer and listen to identify the noise pattern. The type of noise (thumping vs. squealing vs. grinding) and when it occurs (constant vs. intermittent) tells us which component is most likely failing.
We then open the dryer, inspect the drum rollers, glides, belt, idler pulley, and bearing. The failed component is usually obvious once we get inside. Most dryer noise repairs are completed in 30-60 minutes. We carry drum rollers, belts, idler pulleys, and glide kits for common brands on our van.
When we replace drum rollers, we replace all of them at the same time, not just the one that failed. They wear at the same rate, so replacing only one means the others will fail soon. Same with drum glides. All parts we replace come with our 365-day warranty.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a noisy dryer dangerous?
A noisy dryer is not typically a fire hazard, but it indicates worn parts that will eventually fail completely. If the belt breaks, the drum stops spinning. If drum rollers seize, the motor can overheat. It is better to repair a noisy dryer before a small problem becomes a bigger one.
How much does it cost to fix a noisy dryer?
Most dryer noise repairs involve drum rollers, glides, belts, or idler pulleys. These are moderate-cost parts. The labor is straightforward for an experienced technician. We provide an exact quote after diagnosis before starting any repair.
Can I still use my dryer if it is making noise?
You can use it in the short term, but monitor the noise level. If it gets significantly louder, the component is deteriorating and could fail completely. A broken belt means no tumbling, and a seized roller can overheat the motor. Do not ignore grinding or metal-on-metal sounds.
Do gas and electric dryers have the same noise issues?
Yes. The drum assembly, rollers, belt, idler pulley, and blower are the same design on both gas and electric dryers from the same manufacturer. The heating system is different, but the mechanical components that cause noise are identical.
